Company

Pointer was founded in 2010. In 2011 we began working with Shopify and customizing themes for grass roots, mom-and-pop style businesses. Our client base quickly expanded to include larger organizations through a series of key clients including Death Wish Coffee (an early direct to consumer, or DTC, brand) and the New York Times Store. Since then, we’ve steadily grown our team and client base.

2020 was the biggest year in the history of our company. Not only was it our 10 year anniversary but we grew almost 100%, remotely. We designed and built top tier Shopify Plus sites in every industry imaginable. We are focused of creating branded ecommerce experiences bespoke to our clients needs. We continue to push the envelope creating incredible customer experiences.

Position

The Design Director is responsible for managing, mentoring and building the design team at Pointer as well as be a key member of the core leadership team. This role involves coordinating and overseeing the lifecycle of design projects and promoting best practices for modern web design within the team.

You will be responsible for everything under the umbrella of design and expect to align all output with corresponding budgets and timelines.

The ideal candidate would have a passion for industry trends in web design and new technologies, especially as it pertains to ecommerce.

Required Skills

• Oversee a team of ~4 designers working on multiple complex projects concurrently.
• Facilitate team meetings to discuss and provide direction to ongoing projects, challenges, and solutions.
• Ensure that creative output is innovative and meets or exceeds internal and client brief expectations.
• Effectively communicate project requirements/roles/responsibilities and foster an environment where creatives can thrive.
• Develop trust-based relationships with internal teams and establish yourself as a credible source of expert advice and guidance.
• Contribute to key client meetings and provide excellent design insight in order to help win new business in conjunction with the sales and strategy team.
• Oversee the creation of technical requirements documentation and facilitate accurate and efficient hand off process to development.
• Providing accurate estimations of time to produce high-quality design output to Project Managers and Account Managers.
• Contribute to the Pointer leadership and identify opportunities and drive agency growth.
• Facilitate staff reviews and create professional development goals for your team, clearly aligning compensation increases to those goals.
• 8+ years experience of experience in an internal creative team, agency or design firm with ~5+ years of leadership experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Clear and professional client facing communication.
• Ability to identify, prioritize, and delegate tasks to maximize team efficiency.
• Strong Investigative skills and general curiously to solve problems.
• Phenomenal personal time management skills.
• Extremely strong attention to detail.
• Ability to collaborate and work within a cross-functional teams.
• A keen interest in staying in touch with current and future industry trends, best practices and tools.
• Experience using the Shopify platform is preferred.
